12 Step Guide terms of use

Last updated 14 October 2026. See also the privacy policy.

These terms are the agreement between you and iByte Apps Limited ("we", "us"), a company in Northamptonshire, United Kingdom, for your use of the 12 Step Guide app on iPhone, iPad and Android. By downloading or using 12 Step Guide you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.

Our privacy policy explains how the app handles information. Nothing in these terms affects your legal rights as a consumer.

Who can use 12 Step Guide

You must be 18 or over to use 12 Step Guide and to buy Premium.

What 12 Step Guide is

12 Step Guide is a companion for working the Twelve Steps. It has a guide to each of the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, chapters and stories from the Big Book, prayers, readings, sobriety tips and recordings of Big Book studies and speakers.

  • The step and tradition guides are one alcoholic's experience of recovery, shared in the hope that it helps. They aren't A.A. Conference-approved literature, and they aren't the only way to work the Steps. Your sponsor, your home group and A.A.'s own literature come first.
  • The Big Book, the other A.A. literature and the recordings belong to their owners. Premium pays for the app, the hosting of the recordings and continued development. It isn't a sale of the literature or the recordings.
  • 12 Step Guide is an independent app. It isn't affiliated with, endorsed by or approved by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc. or the A.A. Grapevine. "A.A." and "Alcoholics Anonymous" are registered trademarks of A.A. World Services, Inc.
  • 12 Step Guide is not medical advice and isn't a substitute for professional help, treatment or A.A. meetings. If you're in danger or need urgent help, call 999 in the UK, or your local emergency number.

Free use and adverts

Everything in 12 Step Guide can be read and listened to for free, with adverts. The recordings stream from our server, so they need an internet connection.

Premium

Premium removes all adverts and lets you download recordings to listen offline. It also helps keep 12 Step Guide free for everyone. What Premium costs is shown in the app before you buy. Prices come from Apple or Google and may differ by country.

Premium bought from Apple works on your iPhone and iPad with the same Apple ID. Premium bought from Google Play works on your Android devices with the same Google account. One doesn't unlock the other.

On iPhone and iPad: a yearly subscription

  • Payment. Apple takes payment from your Apple ID when you confirm the purchase. You buy through Apple, on Apple's terms.
  • Free trial. If the app offers a 7-day free trial, you won't be charged until the trial ends. To avoid being charged, cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. Apple decides who can have a trial; normally each Apple ID can have one only once.
  • Renewal. The subscription renews automatically each year unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current year ends. Your Apple ID is charged for the renewal within the 24 hours before the year ends.
  • Cancelling. You can cancel at any time in your Apple ID's subscription settings. Deleting the app doesn't cancel it. When you cancel, Premium keeps working until the end of the year you've paid for.
  • Price changes. If the price changes, Apple will tell you beforehand, following its rules, and you can cancel before the new price applies.
  • Refunds. Apple handles refund requests under its policies, at reportaproblem.apple.com. This doesn't affect your rights under consumer law.

On Android: a yearly subscription

  • Payment. Google Play takes payment from your Google account when you confirm the purchase. You buy through Google Play, on Google's terms.
  • Free trial. If the app offers a 7-day free trial, you won't be charged until the trial ends. To avoid being charged, cancel before it ends. Google decides who can have a trial; normally each Google account can have one only once.
  • Renewal. The subscription renews automatically each year until you cancel. Google Play charges your Google account at the start of each new year.
  • Cancelling. You can cancel at any time in Google Play under Payments & subscriptions. Deleting the app doesn't cancel it. When you cancel, Premium keeps working until the end of the year you've paid for, or of the free trial.
  • Price changes. If the price changes, Google will tell you beforehand, following its rules, and you can cancel before the new price applies.
  • Refunds. Google Play handles refund requests under its policies, from your Google Play order history. This doesn't affect your rights under consumer law.

One-off "Support the app" payments are no longer offered on Android. If you made one, you keep Premium: see "Purchases from the original 12 Step Guide app" below.

Restoring Premium

On a new phone, or after reinstalling, tap Restore purchases on the Premium page, signed in with the same Apple ID or Google account.

Purchases from the original 12 Step Guide app

  • iPhone and iPad. A yearly subscription carries on as before. A tip you gave in the original app now counts as lifetime Premium. On a new device, use Restore purchases with the same Apple ID.
  • Android. If you supported the original app with a one-off payment, you keep Premium for life: it stays with your Google account for as long as we offer 12 Step Guide on Google Play (see "Ending these terms"). It moves across when you update, and Restore purchases brings it back on a new phone with the same Google account. If you've lost it, tap Lost your supporter status? on the Premium page and send us your Google Play order number. We'll check it and help you get Premium back.

Downloads and the recordings

  • Downloaded recordings are for your own personal listening, in the app. Please don't copy, share, upload, broadcast or sell them, or the app's other content.
  • Downloads are a Premium feature. If Premium ends, recordings you downloaded stay on your phone but stream instead of playing offline, until you renew. You can remove them under Downloads in the menu.
  • We may add, change or remove recordings and texts. We'll try to keep everything available, but we can't promise every recording will always be there.

Using the app fairly

Please don't:

  • try to get around Premium or the adverts;
  • copy, change, take apart or reverse-engineer the app, except where the law allows;
  • overload, disrupt or try to get unauthorised access to the app or our server;
  • use 12 Step Guide for anything unlawful.

The app's design, code, artwork and name belong to iByte Apps Limited. We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use 12 Step Guide on devices you own or control, under these terms and the rules of the store you got it from.

If something goes wrong

  • We'll provide 12 Step Guide with reasonable care and skill, and as described in the app and on the store page. If it isn't, contact us and we'll try to put it right. You may also have rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
  • The app depends on your phone, your internet connection and services run by Apple and Google, so we can't promise it will always be available or free of faults.
  • We're not responsible for losses that weren't foreseeable, or for losses caused by events outside our reasonable control.
  • If the app damages your device or other digital content because we didn't use reasonable care and skill, we'll either repair the damage or pay you compensation.
  • Otherwise, our total liability to you is limited to the amount you have paid for Premium.
  • Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn't allow us to limit.

Ending these terms

You can stop using 12 Step Guide at any time by deleting it; remember to cancel a subscription too, in your Apple ID settings or in Google Play. We may suspend or end your use of 12 Step Guide if you break these terms. We may also stop offering the app; if we do, we'll give you reasonable notice where we can. Premium you've paid for is then handled under the store's refund policy and your consumer rights.

Apple App Store

If you got 12 Step Guide from Apple's App Store, these terms are between you and iByte Apps Limited, not Apple. In addition:

  • Your licence is to use the app on Apple-branded products you own or control, as allowed by the App Store's Usage Rules.
  • We, not Apple, are responsible for the app, its content, maintenance and support. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for it.
  • If the app fails to meet any warranty that applies, you can tell Apple, and Apple will refund the price you paid for the app, if any. To the extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app.
  • We, not Apple, are responsible for dealing with any claims about the app or your use of it. That includes product liability claims, claims that it fails to meet legal or regulatory requirements, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.
  • If anyone claims the app or your use of it infringes their intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging the claim.
  • You confirm that you're not in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as "terrorist supporting", and that you're not on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
  • You must also follow the terms of any third-party service you use with the app, such as your mobile network.
  • Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms. Once you accept them, Apple can enforce them against you.

Google Play

If you got 12 Step Guide from Google Play, Google Play's terms of service and policies also apply to your download and purchases.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example when we add features or the law changes. We'll change the date at the top of this page, and if a change matters we'll tell you in the app. If you don't agree with a change, you can stop using 12 Step Guide and cancel any subscription.

The law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. You can bring a claim in the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring a claim in your local courts.
